For the first thirty years of its existence (1918 to 1948), the Corps consisted of a single regiment, with a mixture of volunteers and regulars of the Ceylon Defence Force, and Royal Army Service Corps personnel seconded to the regiment. For the next 15 years (1948 to 63), the volunteer component became the Second Volunteer Company within the regiment. Subsequently, for the next 29 years (1963 to 1992), the regular and volunteer units were raised to battalion strength and were two distinct regiments within the Corps. In its current form, starting from 1992, the Corps is organized as a single regiment with 8 battalions: 7 regular battalions and one volunteer battalion with its Regimental Headquarters at the Panagoda Cantonment. The term corps used in reference to the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps denotes a tradecraft or specialization similar to what is found in the Medical Corps, Signal Corps, Intelligence Corps, etc. For the purposes of this website, the terms corps and regiment have been used interchangeably.

  • On March 9, 1989, the Regular Army Regiment was divided into the 1st Regiment and the 3rd Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps. The Volunteer Regiment became the the 2nd Regiment..
